Summer is a great time to retool your website, especially if it hasn’t been updated in ages. For our first edition of Spotlight, in which we showcase some of the outstanding things Korean American student organizations are doing around the country, we’ve decided to take a look at the website created by Korean American Students at Yale.

KASY uses a clean and functional layout and navigation bar. Its emphasis is not so much on styling or flashy graphics, but on the freshness of the content, which is definitely more important when it comes to maintaining an effective website. Their home page uses a simple blog-style news bulletin to keep people up to date on what’s been happening with KASY. The frequent use of photos makes this site much more attractive.

The integration of Google Calendar to the site (achieved on this site using iframes) allows KASY to track and publicize upcoming events in a clear, easy-to-update format. Using tools such as Google Calendar (or even Xanga) allows more people on the club board to participate in making updates and public announcements.

We can’t emphasize it enough: photos are amazing assets to your organization. KASY does a great job archiving its entire 2005-06 academic year through its photo gallery. In this way, people involved in KASY can relive the fond memories while outside visitors to the site will be impressed by the many club’s numerous activities. Remember, photos are great PR.

Many clubs make the mistake of trying to revamp their website during the school year. Although summer is a tough time to coordinate and to stay motivated, it is also the best time to try different ideas and to build momentum for the new year. In the following weeks, we will discuss various steps you can take to re-evaluate, revise, or revamp your website.
